What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

In 2021, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration revealed approximately 14 million adults live with a serious mental illness. Treatment for mental health disorders can require hospital or inpatient treatment with 24-hour support.

Intensive outpatient treatment is effectively an alternative to or a step down from inpatient treatment. It doesn’t require patients to be admitted into a hospital or permanent residential program. With an intensive outpatient services (IOS), you are still able to go about your usual daily routines. That means there is no need to pause your work, school, or family commitments.

However, even though treatment isn’t as restrictive, it is still highly effective. IOS incorporates both individual therapy and group sessions. Programs can last for ten weeks or more, in which you can spend up to 15 hours each week attending these sessions. You are taught coping skills, which further help with managing your care at home.

Goals of outpatient psychiatric care
Intensive Outpatient Services for Psychiatric Care

The Goals of an Intensive Outpatient Services

There is one primary goal with any Intensive Outpatient Services: to help those with mental health conditions to get better. Our IOS is no different. With our knowledge of mental health, we build programs that are designed to help improve mental health.

This is achieved by focusing on more specific targets. These targets include assisting patients with healing from past trauma and identifying possible triggers that are behind their disorders. We also have the goal of helping patients develop healthy and effective coping skills.

When you join our Intensive Outpatient Services, we take an individualized approach to your treatment. This begins with one of our qualified psychiatric providers performing an evaluation. Whether you require help with anxiety, depression, personality disorders or a range of conditions, we develop a treatment plan that best matches your situation and requirements.

At Atlantic Behavioral Health, our individual counseling covers the following topics:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress management
  • Relationships
  • Medication education and management
  • Communication skills
  • Anger management
  • Guilt and shame
  • Healthy boundaries

During your time enrolled in the program, you will continue to meet with your assigned psychiatric provider. They will monitor your progress and analyze how you are responding to treatment. Based on this, they can also make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan and medication for more effective results.

Our integrated treatment programs also make use of group therapy. For mental health Intensive Outpatient Services (MH-IOS), this is a core treatment solution. It gives patients the opportunity to share their insights and worries, along with listening to the experiences and opinions of others. These reflective psychodynamic experiences help with practicing productive, healthy interpersonal communication skills, as well as gaining a greater understanding of their illnesses – including their current response and how this can be changed for the better.

The Difference Between an Intensive Outpatient Services and Inpatient Program

Inpatient services are an effective form of treatment program, but they are restrictive. This is because they require the patient to remain overnight in a clinic or hospital for at least one night. That length of time is usually much longer for those dealing with issues such as drug and alcohol addiction.

An Intensive Outpatient Services, on the other hand, is a level below a partial hospitalization program or residential treatment. Those that are part of the program do not have to remain on-site. That means if they are receiving outpatient addiction treatment, they can live at home and continue their daily life.

Although less intensive, an outpatient program supplies most of the same benefits as inpatient treatment. Aside from being an alternative option to inpatient psychiatric care, it is also suitable for recovery and relapse prevention following inpatient treatment.
